African guerrillas
Sir, —As the most irresponsible utterance by a New Zealand politician abroad, Mr Mayson’s statement in Tanzania urging the overthrow of the South African Government, reported todav, must be hard to beat. The Government seems determined to create an image of itself as a champion of liberty in Africa as a means of achieving a little limelight on the world stage. If Mr Mayson were to extend his week’s tour to Tanzania he might become aware that the President’s political opponents were imprisoned without trial in 1967 and are still detained. He might then ponder the quality of the freedom which he would have in Southern Africa. He might also question why our Government trades with South Africa (500 tons of butter a few days ago), while banning other contact more prominent in the public eye. Could not Mr Mayson’s political elders teach him a little discretion or keep him at home? —Yours, etc., THINKING ABOUT IT. August 27, 1974.
