Vietnam clash
<.V Z P A -Reuter—Copyright) SAIGON, Aug. 12.
Government reinforcements have been sent to a beleaguered key outpost near Piei Me rangers’ base in South Vietnam’s Central Highlands, the Saigon Command said today. The post — a hill position protecting the south-west flank of the base — was still holding out today 48 hours after radio contact was lost. It was not known if the reinforcements had succeeded in fighting their way to the position.
Piet Me base, defended by a battalion of rangers, has been under pressure for more than a week. It was shelled and assaulted yesterday by Communist troops pushing down from the north. The Command said that the ground attack was repulsed.
