Aims of education
Sir, — As “Senex” says, children these days are better educated in certain ways than the older generation were — but at the cost of sacrificing the basics such as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Although my minimum entrance standard is partial School Certificate, and several of my students have U.E. or better, I cannot assume that they can write (as distinct from printing), spell words like emigrate and repair, or divide by ten. If these girls represent the educational system’s successes, 1 shudder to think what the failures are like. — Yours, etc., M. E. RITCHIE (Mrs) Principal, Richmond Secretarial College.
