Play centres
Sir, —As teachers of five-year-old children we are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of immature five-year-olds starting school. Last week, the Play Centre Federation conducted a publicity campaign aimed at familiarising the public with the work they do. While we do not doubt there are some merits in this system, we wonder if children are adequately prepared for the more formal routines of school. It is important that children do not just play but learn how to play, to respect others and to establish good habits of tidiness, consideration and independence. We understand that in many cases these basic routines are not taught through the play centre system. Children of three to five years old are often capable of far more than seems to be expected of them. — Yours, etc., TWO CONCERNED TEACHERS. i August 10, 1974.
