Tennis body has real estate plan
The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association may enter the field of real estate. The associa. tion’s annual general meeting last evening heard a detailed paper from -Mr B. W. Crofts on the association "as a business."
Mr Crofts, a former secretary and treasurer of the association, proposed that it build a 10.000 sq. ft factory as a regular fundraiser “with a built-in guarantee against inflation.” Mr Crofts itemised maximum costs of sl2o,ooo—land costing about $40,000, and the building, at a cost of $8 per square foot, of $BO,OOO. However, he said that he had reason to think the association’s costs cciild be in the region of $30,000-$40,000. "Who knows what we could get donated bv way of labour and costs?” asked Mr Crofts. One of his seven points for raising the finance required Included an approach for the donation of land from the Christchurch City Council. “They are realigning a lot of land, because of motorways, and snch a donation could be in lieu of the council’s annual grant.” suggested Mr Crofts. The number of advantages listed by Mr Crofts included the lack of necessity for raffles and other fund-raising schemes, and to leave the association free to help new clubs. The only objections—or suggestlons—by the treasurer (Mr S. W. Bullen), were that professional management be brought into the project; and that such a funding should be erected with a tenant I in mind because of a surfeit of I such “shell” factories. ' The management committee : will consider the proposal. 1 Fees I Anv junior player particlnatI ing in senior Inter-club matches
will be required to pay a senior registration fee. The meeting agreed to a notice of motion from it* chairman (Mr R. B. Brown), proposing the amendment. Mr Brown pointed out the technical difficulties in the association policing the matter, and although some clubs objected they had already sent out subscription accounts. Mr H. Dillon said that most of the association’s money was spent on the grass courts. “If Juniors are playing senior competitions, they are using these facilities,” he said. TRIBUTES Dr W. J.
