P.G.A. title to Trevino
t.V.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CLEMMONS (N. Carolina). L. Trevino, armed with a new putter and his old confi dence, broke the faltering uncertain drive of J. Nicklaus with a display of pressure golf to win the fifty-sixth United States P.G.A. championship. Trevino had a last round of 69 (one under par) and claimed his fifth major championship with a total of 276, four under par, on the hilly, heavily - wooded. 7050-yard Tanglewood Golf Club course. Nicklaus made a burst and got into a position to win, but could not maintain it. He also had a 69. On 279 were R. Cole (South Africa), D. Hill, S. Snead, and H. Green. Snead, who won the championship in 1942, had a last round of 68. The victory was worth $45,000 to Trevino, and Nicklaus won $25,700. R. J. Charles (New Zealand) finished a disappointing seventy-third and won $321 His rounds of 75, 75, 77, and 78 left him 26 strokes behind Trevino.
