No need seen for ‘locals’
Small “local pubs” are not really necessary and would not be popular, according to the chairman of Ballins Industries, Ltd (Mr B. J. Wilks).
The idea of small suburban’ taverns was ’ attractive, said Mr Wilks at the annual general meeting of the company. “However,” he said, “because of the many authorities who prescribe minimum parking facilities, minimum bar space, toilet facilities, fire codes and other standards i such a project becomes impractical.” Ballins Industries had been associated with the development of two taverns in the last two years—at Avonhead and at Burwood. “Because of our concern that these units should contribute to the areas and cater for the local population by providing a pleasant, comfortable and adequate amenity, they could well be described as neighbourhood taverns,” Mr Wilks said. The architecture, the par-
titioning of areas for public bars, mixed drinking bars and sit-down facilities in lounge bars left no suggestion of “beer barns.” “Perhaps I should remind the proponents of the ‘local pub’ theory that in our opinion a minimum land area of 3| acres is necessary.” Mr Wilks said. This was needed because ■entertainment noise could ! disturb neighbours.
