Relief for island
I (X.Z Press Assn — Copyright) PORT MORESBY, Aug. 12. Relief planes dropped tents food over the gale-lashed ! island of Nauna in the Bismarck Sea today as civil defence officials worked on a novel plan to combat a [water shortage caused by salt contamination. The 120 inhabitants of the tiny island, just a speck on the map 70 miles east of Manus in the Admiralty Island group, have been battered for two days by high winds and heavy seas which destroyed homes and crumbled cliffs. A distress call from a school teacher on the island late yesterday alerted emergency agencies who responded with this afternoon s airlift of essential supplies. However, said a civil de [ fence spokesman, it appeared ; that a Government trawlei | loaded with food, tents and blankets now heading for th< [ island would be forced to lie offshore until the weather! moderated.
