Big cycle race to Papanui

Z. Press Association) Papanui A, from Christchurch, won the twentyfith consecutive Hope Gibbons annual cycling event in Levin on Saturday and had the fastest time recorded in one quarter of the race, reaching 31 miles an hour.

The team was superior throughout the race and finished on 57min 15sec, which was 29 seconds ahead of Point Chevalier, of Auckland. The fastest time in the 25year history of the race was recorded by Papanui in the second quarter, done in 12min 16sec. All five riders finished for Papanui and Point Chevalier. Papanui’s B team manged a very creditable fourth placing behind Southern Districts, of Auckland. Entering the race for the first time a team from Levin had bad luck with punctures and dropped chains and finished last.
