ANCIENT CULTURE

Discovery in Australia (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE. Evidence of a society with a complex culture believed to be about 40,000 years old had been discovered near Lake Mungo in New South Wales, Professor D. J. Mulvaney of the Australian National University said. The oldest positive site for modem man found in Australia, it has been ■ under investigation since 1969 when a geomorphologist, Dr Jim Bowler, found the bones of an Aboriginal woman which dated back about 26,000 years.

She had been cremated. Other bones have been found since then, and recently the remains of a tall man were found in the same area. After further excavations it would be possible to determine the culture’s entne environment, Professor Mulivaney said.
