Frederik ready for steeples

A brief school by Frederik provided the modest highlight of an unenlightened morning’s work at Trentham on Thursday.

More than anything else, the work served to underline the conditions at Trentham.

The region has had twice its average annual rainfall in the last three months and more than 4in in the last three days. The result is a racing surface which seems sure to be heavy.

Frederik was ridden by the Waikato amateur. D. Gray. The combination jumped five fences. They started at the brush near the 1600 m, by-passed the water on trainer E. Skelton’s instructions, took the next three, which included the double, and finished with the first again. It was a sufficiently competent school to indicate that Frederik is unlikely to have any trouble with the course when he contests the Wellington Steeplechase today.

There were' no outstanding gallops by the flat horses, which worked on the heavy No. 1 grass. Special Son (Lewis), the topweight and possible favourite for the Whyte-Handicap, took Imin lsec for the last 800 m of his work, finishing with 600 m in 44 2The Wellington Steeples lightweight. Rescene, ran a good trial when lie returned Imin 0 3-ssec for the same section of his work, the last 600 m in 43 3Syndrome (Landers) was not extended when he went 800 m in 57 4-ssec, the last 600 m in 42 l-ssec. JUST TOPS READY The Hastings correspondent of “The Press” reports that Just Tops returned a bold trial for the Whyte Handicap when he galloped at Hastings on Thursday morning. Accurate pleased in his trial for the Vittoria Hurdles. On the plough, Just Tops (Withlngton) ran seven furlongs in Imin 36 3-ssec, the last five hi Imin 13 3-ssec and the final three in 41sec. He had the pace on over the first two but was then steadied. He should fare well in the Whyte Handicap as he is thoroughly game. Accurate (Aiderman) and Mill Court (Withlngton) ran seven furlongs in Imin 34 3-ssec. the last five in Imin 8 3-ssec and the final three in 41 2-ssec, LOOKS WELL

All Hands looked in great order for the Whyte Handicap when he ran 800 m in fine style on Thursday morning at Awapuni reports, the Palmerston North correspondent of “The Press.”

Another to impress was Wellineas, which looks one of the toughest All Hands has to beat. ' All work took place on the Inside trial which was wet after overnight rain but still provided reasonably good footing. All Hands ran solo over 800 m. He took 51sec. the last 600 m in 37 3-ssec and he could not have been more impressive. Wellineas was well clear of

Frisky Fred, which did not seem to like the ground after 1200 m in Imin 21sec. the last 600 m in 41sec. Wellineas has never looked or worked better. Bleu Streak was doing well alongside Advent Tor at the end of 1200 m in Imin 25sec, the last 600 m In 41 3-ssec, Bleu Streak is fresh for the Whyte and this is the way he races best.
