Harper Avenue

Sir, — Oh, what a beautiful city. We have several rubbish tips already and [now have acquired another. This is Harper Avenue, between Carlton Mill Bridge and the corner towards Helmore’s Lane. The appalling filth that lies on the road and grass, cardboard boxes, newspaper, tins and bottles, is made much worse by the pools of filthy water. With no gutters or footpaths what else can you expect? If only this road had been removed as was proposed earlier, and put intol parkland, we would now have a splendid road, straight to Salisbury Street without the endless traffic james and badly-parked cars. I Why has something not been done? — Yours, etc., QUINCE. June 24, 1974. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Secular) replies: “The poor condition of Harper Avenue from the end of the median to the Carlton Mill Bridge is recognised. The City Council has already planned improvements for this street on its present alignment but this is dependent upon the enactment of some amending legislation.”]
