Touring teams win Rugby
(N.Z. Press Association)
The Juniors scored their third successive win and the Colts successfully opened a four-match tour, in the New Zealand teams’ Rugby matches yesterday. The pace of the Juniors was too much for NelsonBays, which went down, 3-31, on a muddy Trafalgar Park ground. The wing, R. Hunter, who later moved to centre when D. Rollerson left the field, scored three tries and had a hand in the other gained by P. Gilbert. With G. Seear winning ball in the line-outs, the Juniors backs spun the ball at every opportunity. Gilbert was the most dangerous of the backs and left the defence stranded with' his side’s first try after Hunter had joined the line from the other wing. B. Cederwall came into the back-line effectively and overcame early goal-kicking lapses by landing six from 10 attempts — three conversions and three penalties. P. Higgins, K. Lynch and G Plummer played well in the Nelson-Bays pack and produced some good driving play. The home side’s points came from a penalty by W. Lucre. DUNN EXCELS
The Colts scored a fine, 2540, win over Thames Valley at Te Aroha. The talented teen-age All Black trialist, E. Dunn, had a hand in all five tries scored by the Colts. His slick passing, nicely timed double-rounds and deft kicking to the flanks stamped him a player of real Class. The Colts also had two sound players mid-field in G. Cooke and W. Osborne, while the left wing, E. MacLellan, showed nice balance and genuine pace. Of the forwards, J. McLay had a good first spell, while P. Eggleton came to light later in the game. J. Fleming jumped well in the line-outs.
For the Colts, P. Kingi (2), Dunn, MacLellan and Eggleton scored tries, and R. Wilson kicked a conversion and penalty.
