Mrs Place took a pistol from a drawer and went to investigate during the nig'it when she thought she heard a prowler. Finding nothing unusual, she put the pistol on a nightstand and went back to bed. On Sunday morning she said the awoke, took out a cigarette, reached to the nightstand for the pistolshaped lighter she keeps there — and shot herself in the left hand.
