Labour conference
Sir, — Saturday’s editorial claimed that some matters raised at the Labour Party conference were trivial. Trivial to whom? Certainly not to the persons who raised them. The glory of this conference appears to have been that it was not stagemanaged by the party executive; there was democratic expression of opinion. This expression of opinion, not the working out of detailed policy, is the prime function of a party conference. Demo-
crats should be willing, if need be, to suffer a little triviality as the price of allowing and enjoying the unfettered expression of opinion. May I suggest that this principle applies not only to party conferences, but also to letters to the editor, and to editorials? — Yours, etc., D. C. CLOSE. May 19, 1974.
