V.C. holders gather

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, May 20. More than 200 of the world’s bravest men and women—including 24 Australians and New Zealanders—gathered in London at the week-end.

They were all awarded the Victoria Cross or the George Cross for bravery — mostly during the first and second world wars. The reunion is held every two years by the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association. The “down under” party, who arrived in a Royal Air Force VC-10, includes two Australian State Governors —Sir Roden Cutler, of New South Wales, and Air Commodore Hughie Edwards, of West Australia.

Sir Roden Cutler lost a leg in an action in which he won the VC in Syria in 1941. • Air Commodore Edwards also won the VC in 1941, for leading a daylight bombing raid on the German port of Bremen. The New Zealand party of six includes Captain Charles Upham, the only living double VC winner. Another New Zealander is Mr Clive Hulme, father of the racing driver, Dennis Hulme.
