WET DRY VALLEY
Rain Fell at Vanda Station, Neu "ealand's isolated scientific base in the Wright Valley, a dry valley 80 miles west of Scott Base, on Sunday. Mr T. Bromley, the base leader and meteorologist, said that it uas believed to he the first winter rain in the area. On Saturday, it was calm with a temperature of -48 deg., hut south-west winds sprang up and the temperature climbed to -2deg. It was then that light rain began. Mr Bromley said that, in the dark which now envelops the Antarctic, he was at first not sure whether the precipitation was rain, but after a while he could see it in the station lights and on wet areas on the lee side of rocks.
