“Menial tasks"

Criticism about the way some student teachers are treated when on section at schools was made by a meeting of the Student Teachers’ Association of New Zealand. When at schools some teachers were made to do menial tasks that had nothing whatsoever to do with ! teaching, said the association’s president (Mr D. B. Pope).

In one instance a student teacher was asked to wash the headmaster’s car and in another a student was not allowed to enter the school staff room.

“It was arrogance on the part of the headmaster to order this.” said Mr Pope. “One cannot help but wonder about the treatment and guidance the children in such schools are receiving.” The association also passed a remit asking for the abolition of examinations and tests of any kind. Instead, students should be able to participate more in the concept of self-evaluation and intrinsically-motivated learning.

About 50 delegates attended the week-end conference. They were from 14 colleges throughout New Zealand.
