S. Melnyk equalled the Quail Valley course record with a seven-under-par 65 and tied the veteran D. Hill for the halfway lead in the Houston golf tournament. They had 36-hole totals of 137.
R. Stanton (Australia) and T. Kite were tied for third place, on 138. Melnyk, a former United States and British amateur champion, had eight birdies. J. M. Lister (New Zealand) was on 146. with rounds of 75 and 71. His countryman. R. J. Charles, withdrew after his first-round 78.
