Waiau River irrigation

A right to enable the Crown to take water from the Waiau River to supply the proposed Waiareka Downs irrigation scheme has been granted by the North Canterbury Catchment Board. The chairman of the water committee (Mr H. E. Connor) said that the right to take 43,200 cubic metres of water a day enabled surplus water to be taken from the river, but the extraction might not always be allowed at that figure. Future demands for water from the river might necessitate a reduction. The conditions of the grant required race losses to be minimised, and restrictions on the individual amounts drawn for irrigation. Federated Farmers was asked to convene a meeting with the board and the North Canterbury Acclimatistion Society to discuss the allocation of water from the Ohoka Creek.
