Prompt prop prevails

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Prompt action by the Wellington representative prop, K. Phelan, probably saved the life of an Athletic Club teammate in a Welington senior Rugby game on Saturday. M. Bond, the Athletic centre and Junior All Black nominee, swallowed his tongue after colliding with an Upper Hutt back at Maidstone Park. He was unconscious for a short while. Phelan, a policeman, went to Bond’s aid. “Merv went down after he collided front on with his opposite,” Phelan said later. “I just went up, pulled his tongue out, and put him on his side until the ambulance arrived.” Phelan also motioned to a policeman on the side-line, who called for an ambulance with his walkie-talkie radio. “Everyone was just standing around — only the whites in his eyes were showing,” Phelan said. Bond was admitted to Wellington Hospital for observation on Saturday night, but was discharged at 8.30 p.m.
