BRANDT PARTY WINS

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAARBRUECKEN, May 6.

The Social Democrat Party of the West German Chancellor (Mr Brandt) confounded political experts today byreversing its recent trend of electoral losses and scoring gains in Saarland area communal elections.

Despite the restricted nature of the elections, for local councils, similar polling recently reflected public disaffection with Chancellor Brandt and his party on a federal level. The trend had been expected to be confirmed in Saarbruecken today in view of the recent disclosure that an aide in the Chancellor’s office was an East German spy. But the official preliminary returns showed that his party polled 38.7 per cent of the vote compared with 37.6 per cent six years ago. The Opposition Christian Democrats scored most gains, however, increasing their 37.6 per cent at the last elections to 48.8 per cent.
