Keeping on puffing
(N.Z.P.A.•Reuter—Copyright) ■ LONDON. April 28. British smokers have largely disregarded Government warnings of the possible ill-effects of smoking and last year puffed their way through a record 137.400 million cigarertes. according to a survey published today. Almost half the population of Britain still smokes, and last year they spent £1,500m on cigarettes, the report, by “Mintel,” a marketing intelligence journal, said. “Mintel” pointed out that the three major cigarette manufacturers in Britain spend more than £l7m a year on advertising, compared with the £250.000 spent annually on the Government's anti-smoking campaign. The report commented: “The cynic might argue that the Government tried to discourage consumption for health reasons in such an insignificant way that the dutyraised — over £lloom a year — is not adversely affected.”
