Steel price increase

Z. Pre xs Association) AUCKLAND. The Government has given Pacific Steel, Ltd, authority to increase selling prices $25 a tonne. The company recently agreed with the executive of the New Zealand Steel Stockholders’ Association and the Government that it was necessary to import 15,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel bars to supplement the company’s production from the Otahuhu mills. Small-diameter bars were becoming scarce.

The imported steel from Japan would be about $lOO a tonne more than current domestic prices. The $25 a tonne had been approved to enable the company to recoup the excess cost.
