Team had stormy week-end

What had been planned as a simple day trip turned into an almost full week-end excursion for members and supporters of the Canterbury Rugby league team which flew to Wellington on Saturday morning. The team’s flight had a bumpy descent into Wellington Airport because of strong winds. The gale prevailed throughout the day, and the airport was closed before the party was due to return to Christchurch a few hours after the game. Most of the players required for inter-club matches yesterday were able to be rebooked on a morning flight, but seven other players, four supporters and two journalists were delayed until late last evening.

The game at Wellington will certainiy not boost the finances of the Canterbury Rugby league. As well as having to pay the unexpected hotel expenses, league will lose its share of the proposed television fee because of a mid-after-noon power cut in Wellington on Saturday. The weather restricted the spectators to a hardy few hundred.
