Triumph for R. Verner
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The $9OOO Nivea Stakes, one of the feature races at Avendale on Saturday, was a triumph for the Takaninl trainer, R. C. Verner. Verner saddled the three dividend-payers. Soliloquy. Kashmir Belle, and Melody Belle, and his other starter, Vibeke, finished sixth. Soliloquy, the warm favourite, did not take long to hit the front, and she scored by half a length from Kashmir Belle, while Melody Belle, the least-backed: of Verner’s runners, paid $4.50 for third. Ismay was a late scratching for the Nivea Stakes. She was found to be bleeding slightly from one nostril at the start, and was withdrawn on veterinary advice.
It was found that Ismay had bumped her head just below the right ear while being taken to the course in a float. The veterinary surgeon reported that the bleeding was consistent with a horse’s having suffered such a bump.
