Pupils’ low reading age

(N.Z. Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 28. Up to 50 per cent of pupils entering New Plymouth Boys’ High School had a reading age of less than 12 on arrival, the headmaster (Mr G. R. Cramond) said at the weekend.

Consequently, they had difficulty interpreting third form text books.

He had been asked to comment on a statement by a Christchurch bookseller, Mr G. Tait, that 80 per cent of New Zealand primary school teachers were incapable and incompetent to teach reading

Mr Cramond said he believed Mr Tait was referring to the ability of pupils to appreciate works of literature.
