N.Z. down 1-3 to Dutch

New Zealand trailed the Netherlands, 1-3, at the end of the first day of its friendly tennis match at Noordwijk Aan Zee. J. G. Simpson gave New Zealand its only win when he beat F. Hemmes, 3-6, 8-6, 6-3, 8-6. His younger brother, Russell, went down to L. Sanders 11-9, 6-4, 5-7, 4-6, (6-4, and the 17 year-old C. ■Lewis was outclassed by J. Hordijk, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. A doubles match between (the Simpson brothers and (the Dutch pair, Sanders and IR. Thung. was lost, 1-6, 4-6. ( The form of J. G. Simpson was most encouraging. He is expected to be New Zealand’s second singles player in the Davis Cup tie with Austria next week-end.
O. Parun, the top New Zealand player, had not arrived at Noordwijk from the United States for the first day’s play against the Netherlands.
