Yachts in trouble

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, April 28.

Saturday was one of those days the crew of the 65-foot yacht Ta’aroa will probably prefer to forget. In the Royal Akarana Yacht Club’s 55-mile race the yacht’s main boom broke, three small sails were blown out, and the blades on the folding propeller fell off.

The yacht was towed to safety by the police launch Deodar.

Another yacht in the race, Bloodshot, was dismasted off the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

Earlier, on Saturday morning the Coastguard was busy helping boats in the offshore powerboat race at Auckland. Today a distress call was received from the 24ft launch Alborak, which took a large wave near the Watchman, between Coromandel and Great Barrier Island.

The wave smashed the window and stopped the engine. However, the launch eventually reached the shelter on Great Barrier Island.
