YOUTHS ESCAPE
Police chased four youths in a stolen car around Opawa and South Brighton at up to 60 m.p.h. last evening before the youths got away by turning off the road and driving along a railway line. The youths drove about 500 yards along the railway line followed by a police car; then they abandoned the stolen car and ran. They have not been seen since.
The car, which was stolen from a Prebbleton horse trainer on Saturday night when burglars broke into his house and found the keys, was spotted by a police patrol in Ferry’ Road about 8.45 p.m. yesterday.
The police gave chase when the car did not stop, following the youths down Ferry Road to Dyers Road, then back and across to Cumnor Terrace, Clarendon Terrace, Radley Street, and Garlands Road. Seven police cars were eventually involved. The stolen car, a 1972 Vauxhall Viva worth $2700, did a sharp right turn from Garlands Road on to the railway line and stopped about half way between Garlands and Ensors Roads.
Tne car was towed back to the centra! police station.
