Calves to $101 at Culverden sale

Store calves continued to meet a steady demand at the second Culverden sale of the season yesterday, although the market generally did not have the buoyancy of the district’s first sale three weeks ago.

The sale drew a yarding of 2175 head, of which 1360 were steers. It included a very good selection of wellgrown steer calves, and very few tail-end lots.

Selling began on the larger pens, and an easier Trend was evident, although values were rated as being well in line with those paid at Addington earlier in the week. The market showed more strength with the offering of smaller pens holding 15 to 20 head per pen, and some good prices were paid. The soundness of the sale car. be judged from the fact that, of 66 pens of steer calves offerd, 40 pns fetched $7O or better Several vendors obtained averages of $7 or more. A pen of very large SimmentalHereford cross calves from Pahau Downs. Ltd, fetched top price of $lOl. The best of more than 100 Angus and Angus cross calves from S. M. Johns (Kaikourai, made $94. and a pen of 20 Angus cross from J.R.T. Cham-

bers (Waiau), made $93. One of the features of the sale was the demand for the Hereford calves from some of the back-country properties. * Best Angus and Angus cross steer calves sold at $B4 to $94, good average at $74 to $B2, medium $6O to $7O, and small down to $5O.
