Bookshop has to move

After 15 years at 119 Manchester Street, John Summers Book Shop has been given a month’s notice, and the entire stock—thousands of volumes— will have to be moved.

“It will probably be next month before I am able to; move out of here to other] premises,” Mr Summers said on Thursday. “I do have another place lined up, which I think will be suitable for the business to move to, but it will be a i few weeks before things] lean be settled and I am ready! |to move.”

Mr Summers said that ] during the 15 years he had! been running his bookshop,' a lot of good will had been; generated with his customers,] and already he had received,

about a dozen offers of help with the move. Because nothing had been settled, Mr Summers said he did not yet wish to make public the address of the new premises, but he said that they would not be far away from his present shop. The Bank of New Zealand,

the landlord of the property which includes the bookshop, was in the process of selling ]it to Equity Enterprises, an Auckland-based property development company. One proposal suggested by the

new owners was that they lower the ceiling by four feet and turn the first floor, into a sauna bath, Mr Summers said. John Summers Book Shop' is reputed to have the best selection of second-hand books in Christchurch, particularly those books special-, ising in art and subjects related to New Zealand. It has> long been popular with stu-i dents, who have found numerous second-hand textbooks on his shelves at re-] duced prices.
