Flood figure now $1m
The estimate of flood; damage in Christchurch earlier this week has! risen to more than slm.; i That is the amount the Earthquake and War Damage Commission expects to pay out on the basis of claims already lodged. Two firms of assesors have had calls from 600 individual [Claimants for household and commercial damage. Dominion Adjusters. Ltd.
jreported receiving about a 'call a minute yesterday. Assessors have begun appraising the damage and find ■that it is much worse than expected.
One firm has lost thousands ■ iof dollars worth of perishable merchandise. Another has had: .water three feet deep swirling through a garage containing 16 new cars. Bird and Turner. Ltd. reIported receiving claims from ; ;250 people for damage estimated to exceed $500,000.! The firm has three assessors: ;working full time inspecting: .damage. FOOD LOST A wholesale merchant,: Dingwall and Paulger, Ltd,! reported damage amounting ! to $50,000 at its warehouse. Staff had been working soleiv 1 lon cleaning up since Wednes-l 'day, leaving orders from retailers undelivered. i Much of the damage at! the warehouse has been to; perishable foodstuffs, which have had to be thrown out.
