$5m scheme suggested

A ssm scheme to carry’ effluent from the Bromley treatment plant out to sea to avoid polluting the AvonHeathcote estuary has been recommended by’the Nature Conservation Council.

The council suggests that a pipe should carry effluent from the oxidation ponds to a point approximately 40 to 60 chains seaward of the junction of the Avon and Heathcote channels, discharge to be permitted only on the ebb tide.

A more accurate point of discharge would be determined by hydraulic studies, says the council.

Although it agrees that urgent modifications are needed to reduce odours from the plant, the council says that the Christchurch Drainage Board should consider the wishes of other users of the Estuary before expanding the plant, and urges that an environmental report be undertaken to study the effect of effluent discharged .to the Estuary. The Drainage Board proposes collecting gas from the plant for the generation of power to supply the whole plant, resulting in a saving |of $55,000 per year, the coun-| cil say in its newsletter.
