FOG HITS FLIGHTS

About 500 passengers were! affected by the cancellation of 15 N.A.C. flights yesterday! after Christchurch Airports was closed by fog until 10.30! a m. However, by the end of the i Cay only 30 were unable to j reach their destinations. The airline provided a special Boeing 737 flight to Wei-! lington and chartered an AirNew Zealand DCB on Christchurch - Wellington - Auckland leg to cater for the rest of the backlog. Because of the fog a Qantas 707 flight from Melbourne, which should have ■landed at 6.10 a.m. arrived overhead, made two attempts tc land, and then diverted to Auckland. It returned to Christchurch about 12.30 p.m. and left for Melbourne at 1.15 p.m. As a result of this diversion and late running, the Qantas flight from Melbourne which should have arrived at Christchurch at 3.55 p.m. did not i land until 8.45 p.m. it left; again for Sydney al 9.45 p.m.
