Enrolments down Students enrolled at the University of Canterbury this year total 6504, a drop of 148 compared with last year’s figure. The number of firstyear students is 1674 (compared with 1670), and overseas students total 582 (a decrease of 16), said the ViceChancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips). New by-pass The new Temuka heavy traffic by-pass comes into use officially from April 1. A special order, confirmed by the Temuka Borough Council at its last meeting, makes it compulsory for heavy traffic to use the by-pass instead of State Highway No. I? Notifiable diseases Six cases of salmonella — food poisoning — were reported to the Department of Health in Christchurch last week. The supervising inspector (Mr C. H. Edwards) said that four of the reported were from one family. Four cases of infective hepatitis were also reported to the department. <* New service A daily DCIO service will replace the present Air New Zealand DCB flights from Auckland to Los Angeles from April 1. The service has been made possible by the purchase of the airline’s third DCIO. The DCB aircraft will be used on other Air New Zealand routes, including the service from Christchurch to Nandi/ via Wellington, which will start on April 4.
