Choir to sing in cathedral
The second recital this year in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament will be given tomorrow at 8 p.m. by the Choir of the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church under the choirmaster, David Sell, with the organist, Russell Kent, and an ensemble of brass players.
The programme includes music by Schutz. Victoria. Viadana. Sweelinck. Britten, and Flor Peeters. The Lenten iseason will also be marked' by a group of Passiontide ■carols and hymns. “Oxford Terrace" is j known for the standard of| its music, and there has 'been a constituted choir at the church more than 100 I years. For many years the. ; choirmaster was the late Victor C. Peters, and it was as a result of his work there that he founded the Christ-, church Harmonic Society. David Sell, senior lecturer in music at the University of Canterbury, has been choirmaster.since 1964. During that time, in addition to | the regular singing at Sunday services, the choir has given many recitals, and has ! made trips to Nelson, Dune- I
din. Ashburton, and Timaru. The choir has also produced | one commercial recording, 'and last December gave a national broadcast of Advent hymns. On April 12 it will present a programme of Passiontide hymns and carols on the National Programme. ■ Russell Kent has given a number of organ recitals, and will give a programme for the Society for Contemporary Music later this year. He is a past president of the Christchurch Organists’ Association.
