CLOSING OF SCHOOL South Malvern era over
The sole-charge South Malvern School, near Coalgate, has been forced to close after 91 years of service. The last eight pupils left last year. In the first decade of the century the school had a roll of more than 65, mainly children of parents working in the Wallsend Mine or the pottery works. Now, a steadily declining roll and better facilities at Glentunnel have forced the school to close eight years before its centenary.
Its closing will be officially marked by a local function on March 16, which it is hoped former pupils will attend.
