Elderly housing tender let
Work will begin soon on the construction of a 30-unit. $262,000 housing project for the elderly in Jura Place, Linwood.
The project is one of several planned by the Christchurch City Council which will give a total of 194 units. It is the most far advanced.
The council last evening approved the letting of a tender to L. R. Builders, Ltd,
for the Jura Place project; and approved also the expen-, diture necessary on ancillary work, such as a sealed road-' way to the new development. The tender, for $172,508.85, was the lowest of three, the others being for $197,492.74 and $220,043. The other projects plannsd are: Jerrold Street and Opawa Road, 36 units; Brougham Street, 18 units; 22 Opawa Road, 18 units (in two stages); Bowie Place, 8 units; Dover Street, 26 units; 263 Ferry Road, 16 units; Mary Dixon Place, 20 units; Ensors Road, 14 units; Conference Street, eight units. The council will ask the Municipal Association to support a move for legislation to be changed to allow local bodies to request subdiwiders to set aside land in any subdivision for housing for the elderly.
