Lister lies fourth

(California). M. Hayes, a “rookie” from Oklahoma, had a 68 and took a surprise lead in the first round of the 5160,000 Bob Hope Desert golf classic. While Hayes, a 24-year-old, managed to tame the gusty desert winds at Indian Wells, the sandstorms dealt severe blows to some of golf’s great names in the opening round of this fiveday, 90-hole tournament. J. Miller failed to break par for the first time in 15 rounds. Hayes held a one-stroke advantage over L. Elder, and M. McCullough, a former schoolteacher. L. Harris, R. Acton, and J. Lister of New Zealand followed on 70. The 128 professionals play one round on each of the four desert courses and have a different threeman team of amateur partners each day. After 72 holes the field is cut to the low scoring professionals for the final day’s play at Indian Wells.
