Japan-Aust, bird pact

j '(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter —Copyright) TOKYO, Feb. 6. Japan and Australia today signed a treaty for the protection of 66 species of migratory birds. The signing ceremony, at the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo, was attended by the Japanese Foreign Minister (Mr Masayoshi Ohira) and the Charge d’Affaires at the Australian Embassy (Mr D. J. Horne). The Japanese Government will soon submit the treaty ifor approval by the Diet (Parliament). Exchange documents are attached to the pact to apply; it to Papua and New Guinea after their independence from Australia.

Japan has already concluded similar protection treaties with the United States and the Soviet Union, and is seeking one with China. The accords call for rigid control on the catching of migratory birds and on the import and export of species in danger of extinction.
