Emergency calls
The St John Ambulance Association received 645 telephone calls for emergency medical and dental treatment during the Commonwealth Games.
Of this, 523 requests were for medical attention and 122 for dental treatment, the largest daily numbers of requests being received in the first three days of the Games. Although a large number of people were in Christchurch, fewer were injured in motor accidents than in January of last year. Ambulances carried 125 accident patients from 103 accidents, compared with 179 patients from 96 accidents last year. The total distance covered by ambulances last month was 16,342 miles, compared with 14,382 miles last January, and the total number of patients carried was 2263 (1917).
