Food up 16 p.c. in year

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 6. Food prices in January this year were 16.2 per cent higher than in January, 1973, according to the Acting Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris). The food group index of the consumers’ price index for January, 1974, was 17H (on base 1965-1000) compared with 1964 for December, 1973. This 1 "-point increase amounted to a 1.0 per cent increase in the average level of food prices between December. 1973, and January, 1974, he said. The main contributions to lhe 17-point rise in the allfood group index came from fruit and vegetables, 12f points; hogget meats, 2J; pigmeats, i; canned fish, 1; eggs, 1; confectionery, and meals away from home, J of a point.

The total effect of these increases was offset by a downward contribution of 11 points from beef items. Food is the only group of the consumers’ price index for which prices are surveyed each month, the complete allgroups index being prepared quarterly.
