THREAT TO QUIT

Boyle, of Mel-, bourne, the gold medallist in! the 100 metres and 200 ‘ i metres sprints at the Com-1 ,monwealth Games in Christ;church, has threatened to give up athletics if she is not allowed to run in Canada. Last Saturday, Miss Boyle, aged 22, was invited to run in the Maple Leaf Games and :at other meetings in North America, and was to have deft Australia yesterday or i today. But the Australian Amateur Athletics Union, which must ! grant her permission before she can compete overseas, says she cannot go unless she is accompanied by a manager, ess, whose expenses would have to be paid for by Canada, and not until a detailed itinerary is supplied.
Miss Boyle objected to being accompanied by a manageress, saying: “What ido they think lam — a three-year-old? I’m extremely disappointed. If I can’t go overseas, I’ll quit running this season, and I won’t compete in the national titles.” Athletics sources say it is unlikely that the Canadians will agree lo pay for a 'chaperone, but no reply has ibeen received to an urgent cable sent by the Australian Amateur Athletics Union.
