Protest lodged about decision
A protest has been lodged with the New’ Zealand Cricket Council by the Canterbury' association after Wellington was awarded the equivalent of an outright win (10 points) when Canterbury failed to reach the venue in time for its first-round match in I the Rothmans under-23 tournament. Bad weather, which closed Wellington Airport for much of Sunday', and the heavy traffic on Monday morning after the Games prevented Canterbury from reaching its destination. Rules for the Rothmans j tournament are basically the same as for the Plunket Shield and the 'complaint is that the Welling-i
ton association, which organised the tournament, has made some different interpretations. The chairman of the Canterbury association (Mr I. P. Anderson) said yesterday, that under Plunket Shield rules a team must be given I the chance to play if eight [hours of play remained. Cani terbury arrived in time to ful(fil that requirement. Mr Anderson said he be'lieved that other different in-; iterpretations were the exTension of hours on Monday ; because of bad light earlier, and the use of new pitches •for the second day of play ion Tuesday. ' Canterbury and Wellington [were both awarded six bonus points, the average won in .other games. I
