Canadian yachtsman wins regatta main race

ißy J. O. COFFEYj P. Isaac, a Canadian who recently competed in the world O.K. dinghy contest off the South Australian coast, made his brief a isit to Lyttelton memorable by winning the Mount Cook Airlines “race of champions” during the Canterbury Yachting Association's annual regatta yesterday.

Although the showers and near calm of the morning, the strong afternoon breezes, and the cold, overcast skies did not lend themselves to pleasant sailing, the regatta drew a record ■ entry of 207 small craft and 30 keelers.

The lack of wind, and a necessity to get the I Sunburst yachts to the j shore for the event, persuaded officials r to shorten the course for 1 this class when the J morning programme was $ well under way. t Unfortunately, many other r skippers misread the instruc- \ tion and thought that their f own courses had been ! ( changed. By following in the st wake of the Sunbursts, they'; automatically disqualified , t themselves, and caused fur-i] ter confusion by approaching!; the finishing line from they ■wrong direction. No placings were awarded j in the Flying Fifteen, J.C.,'( Finn. O.K. dinghy or com-4 bitted Flying Dutchman-it Jollyboat-470 sections be-tj cause of this. Boats in other!; classes also failed to com- | plcte the course within theij rules, although it was notice-1 ; able that the experienced D. j Elder and R. May (Javelins)-) and J. Rountree and P. Town-;, send (R class) kept clear of j< trouble. | t One lap < As the easterly breeze' came up the harbour, those crews that had not eliminated ; themselves were able to fin- L ish in sufficient time to make;' necessary only a 15min post-1 ponement of the afternoon’s;, proceedings. But because of T the delay the “race of cham- , pions” was restricted to ones lap. lew problems P. Lester, of Christchurch.il led for most of the journey.-I only to venture too near the shore on the last beat and ' enable Isaac to take lined honours. This was a reversal of their performances at the! world O.K. championship,;' when Lester was a very' praiseworthy seventh and!, Isaac did not find a place; among the top dozen helms-; men.

[ The Manitoba O.K. cham-' , pion. Isaac was third in the; ; North American series' ■ last August. He apparentlybhad few problems of adjust-; i.ment to the two-man Sun-; .'burst, his partner being the J usual skipper of Sunmaid (its: name temporarily changed toil ' Sedley Wells) R. F. Nords- i from. A. E. Britton, another pro- i] ' minent Sunburst yachtsman, h was with Lester. Behind the!] ' first two came R. J. Watson!] ''(Auckland) — whose versa-;' utility and all-round skills had!] 'already been proved by], honours in Finns,l, •; Flying Dutchman and Dragon;. Uevents—and the craft’s skip-; : iper. J. Douglas. ■, The former New Zealandj, ■i Finn champion, J. G. Farmer'! >i (Rotorua), did not get among i, The top trio in the invitation . •;race. but he was prominent J •-in his specialist class in the ; ; afternoon. Farmer did not ) fully extend himself, or the ( ! Finn that he borrowed from j ■’an Olympic Games team- • mate. B. E. Treleaven. and; ( *; had only two boat lengths to!. •Isnare over D. J. Campbell.!' ■ dropping behind Campbell on;j handicap. Watson was also in i' this event, using Finnsarby,;' owned by B. G. de Thier. Regular crews i i; * The Sunbursts were re- ■ to their regular crews J '!in good time for the after- ' j Troon regatta heat, which was : J 1; also the third race for the 'Canterbury championship. ’.H. H. Kingham and Mrs E. ■Edgerton, the title-holders,-dominated the class, finishing; more than 7min ahead of the Nordstom brothers and being; , I first on handicap as well as' .'fastest time. ; Only the Trailer Sailers,; I with 53 entries in two sec-1 jitions, surpassed the 38-strong ■ I Sunburst representation, and. e they, also, competed for! >, (championship points. T. ■ ciShapland and B. Heald! i'gained their second line' e (honours for the day among; - the Hartley designs and J. May and N. Norris were the

quickest around the course in the open and Noelex race. Bester (O.K. dinghy), M. E. Seiwood (International Moth). Rountree and Townsend (R class) and C. J. Hensley (A class catamaran) established a marked superiority over their fleets, Rountree and Townsend providing one of the afternoon’s highlights with the amount of pace they mustered when their spinnaker was set. Manders do well The unusually-named A. K. Flophouse, with P. G. Beaumont and R. Eastmond aboard, prevented Elder and May from gaining a line, but not handicap, double. G. S. Mander and his nephew, S, Mander, did exceptionally well in the new' 470 to keep Elder and May from making up all of the 3min advantage that. Manders had started with. K. Welsh and P. Hoskin comfortably beat the other J.C. crews, and C. Roberts slipped away from the P class group. K. Henderson and R. L. Smith had a turn each at leading in the New Zealand Moths, but it was the consistent G. Corkin who claimed top handicap billing both times. Although the fresh weather of the afternoon caused quite a number of capsizes, and persuaded some to turn their helm towards home, there seemed to be little serious gear breakage.
