CANNABIS IMPORTED
IX.Z Press Association > AUCKLAND. Feb. 6. A university lecturer was convicted and remanded on bail after appearing in the | Auckland Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of importing cannabis. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant D. S J. Butcher, said James Michael Cummins. • aged 30. arrived at Auckland Airport yesterday on his way to Wellington to take up a lecturing position in Victoria University. Cummins was seen by a customs officer to remove a bag from his suitcase, and try to conceal it in the leg of his trousers. Two sticks of cannabis amounting to one and a half ounces, were found inside the bag. Cummins said the sticks were spices for cooking.
Cummins told the Court it was a stupid thing to do,, and he asked for leniency to I preserve his professional reputation. Mr M. L. Morgan, S.M.. 'aid it was a serious offence for which gaol was possible. He remanded Mr Cummins on bail of $lOOO, and a surety in the same sum to appear for sentencing in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
