TREATY KEYNOTE Tolerance and compromise
<.\rir Zealand Press Association' WAI I ANGI, February 6. Ihe Queen said tonight that no countn could claim to have made a greater effort that had New Zealand to work out a life style acceptable to all sections of a multi-cultural communitv.
In a speech at celebrations marking the anniversary of the .signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. the Queen said the treaty was "based on compromise and tolerance and has set the keynote for this country’s development. "Since then peoples from all parts of the world have come here to make their homes," she said. “No-one should under-estimate the strains and stresses which the mixtures of races and cultures can generate.” The solution to such social problems could not be left to chance. There must be a
conscious effort to work to- , gether to solve them Referring to the Games in Christchurch, she said: "This is the true spirit of the ComI monwealth. It is this friendliness between nations, this comradeship, which I am sure we all want to see flourish within the Commoni wealth family and spread to all peoples of the world." The Queen said New Zealand would have an increasingly important part to play • in the Pacific and in world . affairs. “Bui her voice will only be heard if it comes from a I strong united people, con-; scious and proud of their nationhood.” Both the Queen and the ; Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) noted that the first celebration of New Zealand Day coincided with the twentysecond anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the Throne.
