Proposals for park
A drive-in cinema, and an ice and roller skating-rink tare among the ideas the ■Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) has to ensure the full use of Queen Elizabeth II Park. The Christchurch City Council has applied, on Mr 'Pickering’s initiative, to the i Ministry of Internal Affairs (for a licence for a drive-in 'cinema, which, if the application is granted, will be the (first in the country. The council would hold the ( i licence but a private com-1 pan}' would build and run the: cinema. The area on the cityi side of the main stadium,! with an entrance off Travis 'Road, has been suggested as a site. Individual sound would be i provided for each of the 6001 ! cars that the site could cater: for. The matter has not yet been before the council and will be raised at the next meeting. The Mayor said that the notion behind the cinema and skating rinks was to bring the area alive and also to provide entertainments which were profitable.
