Seat-belt standards for children

GV Z. Press Association —Copyright) WELLINGTON. The Standards Association has published a standard specifying the types of restraining devices necessary in cars to prevent injury to children.

"The success of the seatbelt as a restraining device for adults in car accidents has led to investigation into how young children might be similarly protected," the association said in a statement. "The problems involved in restraining young children in a car differ from those associated with adults,” it said. “This standard specifies, so far as is possible at this stage, restraining devices for children up to the age when

they are old enough to wearj seat belts.” The standard says that: I Babies should be carried in; restrained bassinets. Toddlers should wear a harness restraint and be provided with a form of support, such as a spe-cially-designed chair. Sub-teen children should i normally sit on a car seat and be restrained; by harness only. Teen-agers should use adult ’ seat belts. |
